First Sunday of Advent Sunday (Violet or Blue)

Sunday, December 3rd, 2017

Morning Prayer: (Year 2) Ps 146, 147; Am 1:1–5, 13—2:8; 1 Th 5:1–11; Coll 268

Holy Eucharist: (Year B) Propers 268; Is 64:1–9; Ps 80:1–7, 16–18; 1 Cor 1:3–9; Mk 13:24–37; Preface of Advent

Evening Prayer: Ps 111, 112, 113; (Is 1:1–9); Lk 21:5–9; Coll 268

On Sundays and ferias, the DOL provides three readings to be distributed between MP and EP. If four are desired, an OT reading (in brackets) is provided at Evening Prayer, taken from Year 1—see BAS p. 450. An Advent wreath may be erected in the church with four candles (Rose for Advent 3 and Violet for the other Sundays). Each Sunday (beginning with First Evening Prayer), the appropriate number of candles is lit in advance of the liturgy. A wide variety of prayers have been published to accompany this lighting. These can be useful in planning a liturgy for children, but can also overwhelm the Propers provided by the liturgy for Advent. The lighting of the wreath in silence (perhaps by children), before the Service begins, is a very moving way to introduce the liturgy of the day. In some places, the candles are blue. A fth candle (white) may be placed in the centre of the wreath to be lit Christmas Eve and throughout the Christmas Season. The commemoration of Francis Xavier, Missionary to the Far East, 1552 may be observed 11 December.
