The exercise of prayer

Prayer takes time, and practice, and effort, as do all manners of healing and growth and strengthening. But, once we have decided that we are going to do it, and we commit to it, we discover that it is always worth that effort. Continue reading

What am I doing?

I was frustrated, and in a moment of clarity, I said to myself, “What am I doing? I am a priest; this cannot be the work of the church!” Continue reading

Endurance

One would not expect to be able to complete a physically demanding endurance exercise without training. One hopes that as Christians we spiritually prepare ourselves for the endurance exercise that is life. Continue reading

Crustacean Christian

When I was growing up I had a number of different pets, one of which was a crayfish. I enjoyed the uniqueness of this pet, making sure it was fed, the water changed regularly, and the tank kept suitably clean. Continue reading

God-Given tasks, and God-given times

Photos, words, letters, memories these days are caught up in the digital memories of our phones, tablets, computers, twitter and Facebook accounts. There is so much memory that I rarely find or take time to examine them. The shot is taken, the email sent, little time is taken to reflect or to wait for anything. Continue reading

Epiphany—Responsibility of Revelation

We must take seriously the words which we offer and promote, and how these words may dishearten and dismay, further alienating persons from the community of faith, and God who sustains us in Christ Jesus. Continue reading

In, or of the World

Many in the church lament this reality, and regularly I hear the concerns and comments of members of our faith community. Continue reading

Cheesy Goodness

I do a lot of my own food prep, avoiding commercially packaged foods as much as possible. Yes, it takes a bit more time, and a bit more effort, but it’s worth it. It’s worth it for me for many reasons, not least of which is as a spiritual exercise. Continue reading

Ecojustice, Ethics, and the 100 Mile Diet

I absolutely love food. There are stories in my family that as a toddler I would regularly fall asleep at the table, only to be woken up with my face covered in the contents of my plate. While I have mastered the art of staying conscious at the table, I haven’t yet mastered the challenges of gluttony and indulgence. I have fond memories of trying green peppers for the first time, of an innate desire for the perfect mushroom, and love for all that comes from the ocean, be it shelled or vertebrate. Continue reading

Potholes and Wheel Bearings

As I drive to work each day, I am mindful of the road that is before me. Not only am I wary of the driving conditions, traffic, and such, but also, I am aware of the presence of the spring pothole season that is upon us. Continue reading
