My Community

How we build community depends on how we define community – do we consider our community to be the folks we share geographical location with, work with, we socialise with, we worship with? Continue reading

Card-Carrying Membership: Gold Status!

Now I am not suggesting that we start handing out Anglican Gold Cards, or enter into the process of ‘after 12 tithes you get the 13th free!’ Yet when is the last time that we offered a ‘thank-you’ for the individuals who attend our churches?

From Here and There – Identity and Openness in Community

If one cannot identify Newfoundland and Labrador as where you’re from, instantly the conclusion is, you are a CFA, (come from away). Many times in this instance, the conversations and sharing changes, for there is little hope of sorting out family history, common friends, or a common history. Whether we are from here, or from there, however, identity is essential in the Christian journey. Continue reading

Popular Distractions

if I see the times of worship, meditation and quietness as places where I miss out on the latest pop-culture gossip, then the opposite must hold true as well; Filling up my free time with these things means that I possibly miss out on the grand things of God which can be found in stillness and quietness. Facing Evil

If the church has a role here, maybe it is in reclaiming our message about sin, death, evil, and even the Devil. Founded in 2010 and based at the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, the New Media Project aims to “[help] religious leaders become theologically savvy about technology.” Continue reading

The Simpsons take on Ecclesiology

This dichotomy between the ministry styles of Hooper and Lovejoy clearly set up two visions of church ministry. What does it mean for the church to reach the surrounding society? In once corner, there is the dry, routine, traditional, and seemingly lifeless ministry provided by Reverend Lovejoy. In the other, the new, fresh, relevant Reverend Hooper. The decision seems fairly simple.

Oh Blessed Mistake

Personally, I love it when mistakes happen. What is more, I think God loves it too. These mistakes are blessed moments by which we are reminded that in worship we do not offer perfection; we offer ourselves. The criterion for our worship is not the absence of mistake, but the inclusion of honesty and authenticity. Continue reading

Multi-Faith, Multi-Culture Issues in small community

During my experience of life in Newfoundland I have encountered much openness to differing expressions of faith and culture. Historically communities in the province were settled in relation to safe harbours and plenteous fishing grounds. Many communities were predominantly of one faith expression, with little interaction with others. Continue reading
