The Bottom of the Freezer

Cleaning the freezer to prepare for this season’s harvest can be a metaphor for our Spiritual growth – are we forgetting to use the gifts we have? Is clutter preventing space for the Spirit to move? Do we include spiritual development in our planning? Do we truly celebrate abundance or simply toss it somewhere else to deal with later? Continue reading

Going Home

I think it’s important for us to all have a spiritual ‘home’ where we can go to, where we can feel that complete acceptance and welcome. A place where the location and people and setting all bring us into closer communion with God. A place where we can simply be who God made us to be, where we can feel God’s love no matter what. A place where we can accept wholeheartedly that we are beloved children of God, where we are inspired to take action in the world because of that love and acceptance. Continue reading

Cabin & Camper – Ministry to the Newfoundland Nomad

When is a hat not just a hat?

What is a hat? Is it merely an accessory to wardrobe, an article to be donned or removed without any interior meaning? Is it a tool for head-covering, governed by cultural, social, and religious rules that dictate when it should be worn, and when it should be removed? Continue reading

Might our ‘Love of the World’ Challenge God’s Love for Us?

The hardest part of this lesson for me is to regularly remind myself that my faith is only as strong as I understand it to be imperfect–and in that imperfection, I can never know that it is ‘more’ or ‘better’ than anyone else’s. Continue reading

Bible Study

Bible Study is a regular part of my life. Not always in a scholarly way; but in ways that have meaning for the folks I’ve gathered with. Whatever our motivation, we are invited to study the scriptures. They can be exciting and intriguing, helpful and comforting, insightful and extremely relevant. Continue reading

Dancing, Driving, and Dining – turning the tables of ministry engagement in the church

The needs of persons and of communities change over time, and so I believe that we must adjust how we offer hope and healing to the wider world. I was blessed in 2008 to be challenged by a close friend with a spark of an idea about how the church could engage the wider community. This ‘spark’ changed my whole life, ministry, and world. Continue reading

Depth or Mockery? Theology in the “Man of Steel”

For many, the forced and over-the-top manner in which theological imagery was imputed into the movie is both ridiculous and absurd. After all, the Christian belief in Jesus is not a belief in a superhero.
