Let’s talk ‘brokenness”

The message that we have been given is that there can be an end to our feelings of isolation and depressing loneliness; there can be an end to that soul-sapping emptiness that shrouds people in darkness and pain; there can be an end to those dark shadows of death and those expressions of evil. The ‘IT’ Gift

Tucked within the commercial’s humor is the message that the ‘better’ gift is the more expensive gift. Think about it – fruitcake and sausage grinders have nothing in common. Continue reading

‘Soul songs’

She looked at me and said, “It’s a soul song. Most Christmas carols in the malls and stores aren’t. They are all about ‘home’. I never noticed that before this year, but they are all sentimental about going home – and home isn’t always so great, and then the songs about it are depressing.” Continue reading

Being angry together

Both individuals broke down, talked with great passion about how hard they were trying to stay faithful, how angry they were when they tried to pray… And so together we talked. We talked about the idea that sometimes keeping the faith means raging at God, how that means we refuse to give up on the idea of a God who loves us, we demand that God pay attention to what is going on. Continue reading

Let’s talk about SEX

Our culture likes us to think that purity is the last thing needed in any relationship. If a relationship is to be truly loving, says the culture, it must involve sex. After all why else would magazines like “Cosmo” and “Self” run endless articles of “10 ways to please your man’ and ‘Sexy secrets to heat up the bedroom!’ Continue reading

Tickle Pickles

My son held up the receipt and with excitement in his voice, asked for a happy face. Grinning widely, the employee asked my son ‘Now, what’s the magic word?” Dutifully, my son responded “Tickle Pickles!”

I am who I am

This trend toward self-criticism isn’t just damaging on an emotional level, but also on a spiritual one. Each time we compare ourselves to others, and find ourselves incomplete, we disregard the uniqueness of the person God has created us to be. Continue reading
