Jesus Wants a Party

That’s right. Jesus wants us to party. It is Easter after all. This is not a dry day of solemn introspection. Rather, Easter is the day where the community of faith is called into being – where we are called to joyously fill the sky with our shouts of praise. Continue reading

“Crucify Him!”

The fact is, in distancing ourselves from crucifixion cries we distance ourselves from the cross. We stand removed and apart from it. The refusal to join in with the cry of the crowd brings within it a sense of faulty pride, by which we self-righteously assert that we have no role in the crucifixion story. Continue reading

The Magic of Simple

Like a spectator before a magician, our enjoyment of God’s ways in the world, and in our lives, only increases as we enter into the discipline of simplicity. Continue reading

Mixing Heaven and Earth

Pints & Compline is exactly what it sounds like: a bunch of us hanging out at a pub downtown and finishing the evening with a BCP Compline service. It’s wonderful. Why? Probably because, as we sit there together with our empty nacho plates and pint glasses, our thoughts still wandering through theological ideas and university gossip, we get the sense that our faith is the stuff of everyday life. Heart Conditions

It seems that online symptom databases are not reliable indicators of the strength or health of my heart. Sure, it would be easier for me to take matters into my own hands, but there seems to be an apparent danger in doing that. Continue reading

Outing Santa

Yet what disturbs me about this article, and in truth what disturbs me about the whole dynamic of a Santa-focused Holiday, is the complaint that in some manner Tatton-Brown ‘ruined Christmas. Continue reading

Bruised, Hurt and Dirty!

I have long felt that one of the greatest enemies of the Church is respectability. Without a doubt Pope Francis is pointing out one of the ways in which we allow respectability to get in the way of doing the work of Jesus. It is not pleasant to consider being the bruised, the hurting, and the dirty followers of Jesus. Our structures give us a false sense of security and certainly reinforce our desire to sit in our comfortable pew. Continue reading

Why Pop Culture?

After a sermon a few weeks ago, a parishioner quipped, “Don’t you have anything better to do?” This comment was jovial in nature. It was not meant as a jeer or insult in any way. However, it donned on me that perhaps it would be prudent to write about why I take so much time to understand pop culture. Continue reading

Slow down, you’re moving too fast

Apparently the folks at the Calgary Police department like my car. I know this because they send me pictures of it fairly regularly. Continue reading

Twerks and Sea Shells

I have intentionally withheld posting this for the past couple of days, wanting to see if anyone would mention Gaga’s performance. Why is Miley Cyrus shamed for her scantily clad performance, while Lady Gaga is hailed as an artist for hers? What are the complex issues involved in this? Continue reading
