The Face of Poverty within our Land

In the early eighties I was among thousands throughout the western world who saw the face of extreme poverty and famine through the media’s coverage of children in Ethiopia and other North African nations. The images haunted me, and still remind me of the hardness and helplessness of extremes in the third and developing world. Continue reading

Ecojustice, Ethics, and the 100 Mile Diet

I absolutely love food. There are stories in my family that as a toddler I would regularly fall asleep at the table, only to be woken up with my face covered in the contents of my plate. While I have mastered the art of staying conscious at the table, I haven’t yet mastered the challenges of gluttony and indulgence. I have fond memories of trying green peppers for the first time, of an innate desire for the perfect mushroom, and love for all that comes from the ocean, be it shelled or vertebrate. Making My Voice Be Heard

In all aspects of my life I feel called to speak out against injustice; I feel called to speak out for creation care. And while I know I’m not perfect, I do what I can. And so I feel called to speak out against these subsidies. Continue reading

Grocery Shopping

To be fair, I’m not a huge fan of this task at the best of times. But it always needs to be done. I try to be intentional about what I purchase, and where. I’m one of those folks that you see in the aisles, reading every label. I’m one of those folks who prefers to shop in the smaller, local store, rather than just stock up when I’m in the city.
