Happy Hallowe’en!

It’s Halloween! I’ve had a few recent conversations about the holiday, from the church perspective, so thought I’d share some thoughts. Continue reading

Social Media as Community

Often, students “do community” via social networking using the same content but different methods as they did when I was in school: they share ideas, plan projects, and exchange movies or recipes. They create insiders and outsiders (as every community does). Continue reading

Saying Thank You

Today I’m blogging with a personal expression of gratitude. It’s nice sometimes to have a forum – like this blog – to be able to share things like this. So today I say thank you as I experience, profoundly, the presence of the living Christ in my life. And I pray that you find something to say thank you for. Continue reading

Bless me, father

This week I read with interest the article in The Telegram concerning the annual celebrations commemorating St. Francis of Assisi at the Anglican Cathedral, incorporating the blessing of the animals. While reading the article, my youngest daughter asked why we did not attend and have our dog, Brodie, blessed. I paused for a moment, reflecting upon my reasoning for our absence at this annual occasion. Continue reading

How are you?

Jesus listened to others as part of his ministry. How well do we listen when we ask friends and neighbours “How are you?” Continue reading

Going Home

I think it’s important for us to all have a spiritual ‘home’ where we can go to, where we can feel that complete acceptance and welcome. A place where the location and people and setting all bring us into closer communion with God. A place where we can simply be who God made us to be, where we can feel God’s love no matter what. A place where we can accept wholeheartedly that we are beloved children of God, where we are inspired to take action in the world because of that love and acceptance. Continue reading

Is it a statement of personality and identity – the removal of which means the denial of one’s own story and self-understanding? Is it a tool for head-covering, governed by cultural, social, and religious rules that dictate when it should be worn, and when it should be removed? Continue reading

Looking back–Relationships are relationships, part 2: of classic rock and motorcycles

Driving a British vehicle more than 40 years old has its challenges: spark plugs get fouled up. Bolts fall off while I’m driving. Fuses blow. I leave puddles of oil in parking lots. But it has its advantages: I’m driving a piece of history. Continue reading

Dancing, Driving, and Dining – turning the tables of ministry engagement in the church

The needs of persons and of communities change over time, and so I believe that we must adjust how we offer hope and healing to the wider world. I was blessed in 2008 to be challenged by a close friend with a spark of an idea about how the church could engage the wider community. This ‘spark’ changed my whole life, ministry, and world. Continue reading
