Parental Ponderings

Parenting can be many things: joyful, hope-filled, frustrating—or as one of our new bloggers describes it, overwhelming. Continue reading

Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome!

We wrestle with two kinds of welcome in the fall: welcoming the regulars back into the busy-ness of fall, and asking ourselves how to be hospitable to newcomers. How can we think about welcome to share the good news that God welcomes each and every one of us with open arms? Continue reading

Twerks and Sea Shells

I have intentionally withheld posting this for the past couple of days, wanting to see if anyone would mention Gaga’s performance. Why is Miley Cyrus shamed for her scantily clad performance, while Lady Gaga is hailed as an artist for hers? What are the complex issues involved in this? Continue reading

Gimme Gimme Gimme!

A culture of instant gratification equates God’s love and faithfulness with positive responsiveness to all our wishes and whims. Despite the activity of God in the past, the testimony of God’s faithfulness, and the history of our own redemption, these things are just ‘not enough’. August 25, 2013 14th Sunday after Pentecost

What Are We Teaching Children About Desires?

“Christianity takes desire seriously, far more seriously than the Stoic or the mere hedonist. Christianity refuses to budge from the fact that man was made for pleasure, that his beginning and his end is a paradise, and the goal of living is to find Life…Christianity recognizes that we have desire gone mad within us. But it does not seek to rectify the problem by killing desire, rather, it seeks the healing of the desire, just as it seeks the healing of every other part of our human being.” Continue reading

Lying Little Pigs

My favorite nursery rhyme is “The Three Little Pigs.” It is a story about withstanding attack. Yet as beloved as the story is, it’s a lie isn’t it? I wonder, is the rampant desire to ‘become a celebrity’ about building brick houses and escaping blowing wolves? Continue reading
