Recruiting volunteers

Enrolling and retaining volunteers is often listed as one of the most challenging tasks for those of us running Christian Education programs. How can we find volunteers? How can we recruit enough people to ensure that we don’t end up with a few faithful individuals struggling to do everything? Unfortunately there isn’t a magic formula that solves the problem (if only) but I would like to share a few things that I have learned. Continue reading

Ecojustice, Ethics, and the 100 Mile Diet

I absolutely love food. There are stories in my family that as a toddler I would regularly fall asleep at the table, only to be woken up with my face covered in the contents of my plate. While I have mastered the art of staying conscious at the table, I haven’t yet mastered the challenges of gluttony and indulgence. I have fond memories of trying green peppers for the first time, of an innate desire for the perfect mushroom, and love for all that comes from the ocean, be it shelled or vertebrate. Continue reading

Preparing to Witness

Margaret Thatcher, who died this week, once said that she was nervous every time she gave a speech, especially in the House of Commons. According to a 2001 Gallup Poll, she shares that anxiety with 40% of the population as public speaking is the #2 among Top Ten Fears polled. What are some steps those who agree to witness on stewardship topics can take to reduce the apparent stress public speaking causes? Continue reading

Light

My holidays give me so much light. And where I stay tells a tale of so much diverse life in the light. My bed and breakfast is beautiful and faces the boardwalk of the beach. But it is not isolated. Beside the B&B is a place called Phoenix house which is a place for men to stay as they recover from addiction. And beside that is the “Shul on the Beach”. Continue reading

What game will you play?

Do you remember the classic childhood game ‘Telephone’? You know the one. It stars one speaker, a message, and a room full of eager recipients. One by one the message is transmitted down the line where it emerges at the end confused and distorted. Continue reading

Wait ….. It’s not over yet!

As we know Easter is one of the most important feasts of the Christian year. It is so important that the church sets aside a whole season to celebrate and rejoice. The Great 50 Days of Easter are a wonderful opportunity to explore and celebrate Easter in all its fullness. We couldn’t possibly squeeze all that rejoicing into a single day! But can we really sustain a sense of celebration for seven whole weeks? How can we keep rejoicing when all the jellybeans are gone? Continue reading

Will We Go, Servants Go

We are often locked inside of ourselves afraid to embrace the baptismal call that God has given us. We are often locked, into our churches afraid of what lurks beyond our walls. Jesus is calling us out of those fear filled places. I pray that we are able to embrace the doubt of Thomas and long to feel the wounds of Jesus. I pray that having felt those wounds, and having experienced the presence of the risen Christ that we might respond by GOING – into the world with the confidence of knowing that we were sent by the great Healer, Lover, & Redeemer. Continue reading

The Lord’s Prayer and Stewardship

During Holy Week I enjoyed a little book called “Living Prayer” by Anthony Bloom, a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church until his death in 2003. His chapter on the Lord’s Prayer traces a path of ascent, beginning with the final words “Deliver us from evil” and culminating with “Our Father.” Continue reading
