The TBR shelf

A good book is an opportunity not to hide from the world, but to see the world reflected through a new lens. They offer me ways to explore the so-called ‘secular’ and recognise the glimpses of the gospel that are peeking through. There are stories just waiting to be read… so I’ll always have a TBR shelf – a symbol of the promise for new joys that the good news can bring. Continue reading

Let’s talk about SEX

Our culture likes us to think that purity is the last thing needed in any relationship. If a relationship is to be truly loving, says the culture, it must involve sex. After all why else would magazines like “Cosmo” and “Self” run endless articles of “10 ways to please your man’ and ‘Sexy secrets to heat up the bedroom!’ Continue reading

Tickle Pickles

My son held up the receipt and with excitement in his voice, asked for a happy face. Grinning widely, the employee asked my son ‘Now, what’s the magic word?” Dutifully, my son responded “Tickle Pickles!”

Life in the fishbowl

We all live our lives in a metaphoric fishbowl. It’s not an easy task, but it is part of being Christian. It is showing the world that we want to come to the light, that what we do at all times is a demonstration of our faith. Continue reading

I am who I am

This trend toward self-criticism isn’t just damaging on an emotional level, but also on a spiritual one. Each time we compare ourselves to others, and find ourselves incomplete, we disregard the uniqueness of the person God has created us to be. Continue reading

The Reality of Witness

I was looking forward to seeing how a seminary student would handle the murky morality of Reality TV. How would his or her faith be presented in this show? More specifically, how would someone, presumably in their formative years of life, express their devotion to God and their call to ministry as they schemed, strategized, and battled their way towards one millions dollars?

Sharing The News

There is always news that we want share, and so we always find ways to share it. So with all this news flying about in various fora, how do we share the Good News? How do we live out the Gospel message? Continue reading

It’s like riding a bike

My son often looks at his feet when he is riding his bike. When this happens, his balance falters and he topples over. I remind him that he must keep his vision cast ever forward – to the horizon to which he aims. We in the church need to do the same. Continue reading

Wayward Faith

What happens when you lose your way? For some, “the way” may feel like a pair of glasses without which they cannot see. For others, it is more like a raft that can be left at shore once they have crossed over to the other side of the river, while new “ways” await them as they journey onwards. Continue reading

Perspective

We’re always choosing a way to look at the world around us. Whether exercising our bodies or our spiritual life, we can choose a positive perspective. We can choose to see the world through a different lens, choosing to focus on the blessings. Continue reading
