A Not-So-Holy Week (exams!)

The Christian story is not one which ignores the painful experiences of real life. It is one in which God descends down, all the way into those darkest places with us so that we can be healed by the overcoming power of new life. It is an old, old, story which we experience anew during this holiest of weeks and even in the midst of finals. Continue reading

I told you never to call me here

“Are you answering work email?” I was. It was about 9:30, and my wife, son and I had just returned home from evening prayer. It been out the door shortly after 5am to prepare for a 7:30 meeting, and a day filled with the usual mix of church and communications. And she called me on it. Continue reading

Jesus did not just go to Lazarus’ tomb. He also enters his own and as he plumbs the abysmal depths of death he is present in each and every tomb. In considering Christ’s descent we can begin to appreciate the depth of meaning in his statement, “I am the resurrection.” Continue reading

Son, You Are Important to the Church

Dear son, last night as you were sleeping in your bed, your mother and I snuck into your room and looked at the notes you stuck on your wall. Words cannot express how amazed, delighted, and utterly proud we were when we saw what you had written. Continue reading

Retreat!

While a retreat may not be productive in the traditional sense, it is a beneficial time to re-focus, re-energise, and re-charge. It is a time to celebrate being instead of doing. Continue reading

Grace

The chance to hear residential school survivor Inez Dieter’s story at the TRC was a gift. What happened when our conversation ended will forever shape how I think about and experience grace. Continue reading
