Happy Hallowe’en!

It’s Halloween! I’ve had a few recent conversations about the holiday, from the church perspective, so thought I’d share some thoughts. Continue reading

This month, in our province, in fact, in my hometown of Conception Bay South, again I witnessed the destruction of lives and of community safety due to the murders of Julianne Hibbs and Vince Dillon. Continue reading

Bless me, father

This week I read with interest the article in The Telegram concerning the annual celebrations commemorating St. Francis of Assisi at the Anglican Cathedral, incorporating the blessing of the animals. Lying Little Pigs

My favorite nursery rhyme is “The Three Little Pigs.” It is a story about withstanding attack. Yet as beloved as the story is, it’s a lie isn’t it? I wonder, is the rampant desire to ‘become a celebrity’ about building brick houses and escaping blowing wolves? Continue reading

Ministry or Publicity Stunt?

What is the difference between authentic church ministry and mere publicity stunts? What’s the difference between wanting to build community, and wanting to simply attract attention? These are thoughts I had when I heard about the “Seusscharist”. Continue reading

When is a hat not just a hat?

What is a hat? Is it merely an accessory to wardrobe, an article to be donned or removed without any interior meaning? Is it a statement of personality and identity – the removal of which means the denial of one’s own story and self-understanding? Is it a tool for head-covering, governed by cultural, social, and religious rules that dictate when it should be worn, and when it should be removed? Continue reading
