Community-Specific Language

The other day I received an e-mail from a friend studying philosophy at the University of Victoria. He wrote: “Kyle, I want you to help me prove the existence of God.” . My response to his question was:
“That depends on what God you are talking about. . . .

That’ll Preach!!

Could this be a wake-up call to the Church, and in particular, to Preachers? While we try to squish the gospel message into a run of fancy phrases or 30 second clips, have people actually been calling out for something more? Could it be that it is time that we stop trying to inculturate the Gospel message and just give it?

The Reality of Witness

I was looking forward to seeing how a seminary student would handle the murky morality of Reality TV. How would his or her faith be presented in this show? More specifically, how would someone, presumably in their formative years of life, express their devotion to God and their call to ministry as they schemed, strategized, and battled their way towards one millions dollars?

It’s like riding a bike

My son often looks at his feet when he is riding his bike. When this happens, his balance falters and he topples over. I remind him that he must keep his vision cast ever forward – to the horizon to which he aims. We in the church need to do the same. Continue reading

Wayward Faith

What happens when you lose your way? For some, “the way” may feel like a pair of glasses without which they cannot see. A Culture of Ridicule

Our snarky remarks and snide comments subtly suggest that the individual we ridicule is not worth God’s time, effort, or love.

Stories of Identity

The tattoo is not just a colorful picture on their arm or leg, it is a mode of self expression, an artistic story of identity. The image chosen to be a permanent fixture on the body signifies something important about the individual. Continue reading

Merton, Meditation, and the Mall.

Our spirituality is not the part of our lives lived between shopping trips and coffee-shop visits. Rather our spiritual life is firmly rooted in these places and our particular interactions with them. Every place is a spiritual place, precisely because they are places that we reside. Continue reading

Common Prayer

Welcome to the “Common Prayer” blog. I hope you will find the content here helpful to your prayer life. My intention is to throw in some ideas and through discussion, we will all learn. And by the way, this not a place for prayer requests. Continue reading

Preaching posterior enhancements.

Does the theological discussions and distinctions so prevalent in our ministries, give voice to the availability of God’s kingdom to those considering implanting a mass of love and self-worth into their lives? How does the preaching of Christ and him crucified make its way to that situation – to a situation which at first glance would seem beyond the realms of theology and religion?
