Turning forward, looking back

I find it valuable to consider the ups and downs of life and ministry in relation to journalling. So often as a human being, I am tempted to react to the moment – the point in time, where I may experience joy or hurt, and have that shape my day and my response. Continue reading

Ne me quitte pas

What? ‘surrounded by great passion’ you say? I suppose for those that believe passion is all about love and relationships and sex and all that, then perhaps I’m off the mark. When I speak of passion I hold on to words such as suffering, angst, ordeal, challenge. Continue reading

The sum of all our endings

Having our two vehicles cross the finish line is the conclusion of our participation in Targa NL 2014, yet it is by no means the end of our journey. Continue reading

Three steps forward, two steps back

There are so many ways in which we as individuals and communities can share the negative aspects of life. We can focus on the dance that causes us to take steps backward. Conversely, we can move forward, and remind ourselves that the steps backward are balanced, and I believe overcompensated by the forward steps we take together in community when we stand with others in need and provide the justice that God intends for them. I do. We will. I will, with God’s help.

In a text the other day, I wrote to a friend, “Remember to care for self as you care for others.” As I typed the words, I paused, then added, “Says he who has difficulty practicing what he preaches.” For me this is so true. Continue reading

Where is my point of reference?

Like the spinning compass, I feel as if my reference points are adjusting to the new learning and new encounters that I have experienced. I find myself longing for control, for direction, for ways to step forward and to step in confidence into the future. Continue reading

Encouragement and Generosity

We are called to take the example of others in the faith, who have gone before us, like Barnabas. Perhaps we need to show generosity by selling or sharing the buildings and land that we have, so that others who cannot afford to live in this beautiful place may find a way for the church to bring them home. Continue reading

For the beauty of creation – Litter Skeet?

How can we sing hymns extolling the beauty of creation, the goodness of all that God has given us, while degrading it each and every step of the way? Continue reading

Expanding Horizons

This past week I had an engaging conversation with my two daughters, about the nature of Jesus, Christianity in relation to other world religions, and human discovery. In the course of the conversation, one daughter remarked, “What about when human beings encounter alien species? Who will Jesus be to them?” Continue reading

The Music in My Head

Since a child, I always had a strong connection between music and the things that I do. I have vivid memories of walking the tundra of Baffin Island with my dog, and making up songs and melodies relating to such things as the day’s reflection, the beauty of creation, and the challenges of growing up with elder sisters. Continue reading
