Rejoicing Sunday!

This Sunday marks the third Sunday of Advent (or the sixth, if you’re trying out the Advent Project’s proposed seven-week Advent). And if you’re like my son, what you’re excited about for Sunday is lighting what he calls the “pink candle” (and that I call the “rose candle”). Do you break out rose-coloured vestments this week? Are there any special traditions in your community about the lighting of this candle? We’d love to hear about them! Continue reading

The ‘IT’ Gift

Tucked within the commercial’s humor is the message that the ‘better’ gift is the more expensive gift. Think about it – fruitcake and sausage grinders have nothing in common. Continue reading

The Advent Calendar (week one)

This space for the next few weeks will be a different type of Advent Calendar – a countdown, to be sure. Instead of opening the door to find a little chocolate or toy, each day I’ll examine a treat/jewel of the Anglican Church. Continue reading

Nurturing Hope

Christian hope is grown and nurtured in the community of faith, the church. We can share the message that God continues to bring hope, even in the most desperate of circumstances. We can talk about our hopes for the world, and invite the children to do the same. Continue reading

Advent Joys

I love Advent. And I love all the traditions that are a part of Advent. So here’s my question: what do you look forward to, as we prepare to dive into a new Church year this coming Sunday? What part of Advent is your favourite? What excites you about this season? Continue reading

Christmas BEFORE Advent?!

At the university, Christmas begins before I have even pulled the Advent wreath out of storage! The distance between observing the church year, and the cultural celebration of Christmas is emphasized…And yet, here I am, the Anglican priest on campus, fully participating in all of the Christmas revelry. Continue reading

Advent Resources

Do you ever wonder how we managed before the Internet? I remember that planning took a lot more effort and it was necessary to build a substantial library of resources. Now if I need an idea for an activity all I have to do is go to my computer. I am so grateful for all the creative individuals who post their ideas on-line. This week I would like to share some wonderful Advent resources I have found on-line. I hope you find them useful. Continue reading

Moving Advent Wreaths to the Corner?

We Canadian Anglicans have a tortured relationship with Advent wreaths: they`re widely used, but little loved by our official liturgical practice. There are some good reasons for that, but it makes it hard to plan how to use them well. What role will Advent wreaths have in your church community this coming new year ? Continue reading

The wonder and challenge of Advent

How do we help children and their families find creative ways of celebrating Advent? How can we enable them to find that quiet place of expectancy in the midst of overfull schedules and lengthy “to do lists?” How can we do this without overburdening our volunteers, so that they too can experience a season of joyful anticipation? Continue reading
