Family, Money and Good Financial Habits

As parishes, we are responsible to nurture our children of God in as many ways as possible. Do you have a good Sunday School program that helps children understand the importance of sharing, saving and spending? Are you teaching the best practices of stewardship in your youth community? Continue reading

Scarcity and Abundance

At the 2012 Diocesan Synod in the Diocese of New Westminster, our episcopal visitor, The Right Rev. Bishop Greg Rickel of the Diocese of Olympia gave a TED-style talk about money and stewardship. Continue reading

Is your giving up to PAR?

By making a monthly gift to the church through our bank account we demonstrate the important role the church plays in our lives and the value we place on ensuring that the ministry needs of the church are met. Continue reading

Generosity

It all starts (and started) with God looking at a blank canvass onto which He imposed creation and, thereby, gave us all that we have. All that we have! Continue reading

Greening Your Sunday School

As Christian Educators it is our responsibility to help the children make the connection between faith, stewardship, and environmental awareness. There are many ways to do this, but before we start thinking about lessons and projects I believe we need to take a good look at the way we do Sunday school. Do our learning areas and group sessions model environmentally responsible practices? Do we show our care for God’s creation by our choices of activities and the way we use materials? Practical Spirituality

By stepping out from where he stood Weston got so many others invested in helping build aircraft that the project took on a life of its own . . . touching people in virtually every community in Canada. Continue reading

Cheesy Goodness

I do a lot of my own food prep, avoiding commercially packaged foods as much as possible. Yes, it takes a bit more time, and a bit more effort, but it’s worth it. It’s worth it for me for many reasons, not least of which is as a spiritual exercise. Continue reading

Ecojustice, Ethics, and the 100 Mile Diet

I absolutely love food. There are stories in my family that as a toddler I would regularly fall asleep at the table, only to be woken up with my face covered in the contents of my plate. While I have mastered the art of staying conscious at the table, I haven’t yet mastered the challenges of gluttony and indulgence. I have fond memories of trying green peppers for the first time, of an innate desire for the perfect mushroom, and love for all that comes from the ocean, be it shelled or vertebrate. Continue reading

Preparing to Witness

Margaret Thatcher, who died this week, once said that she was nervous every time she gave a speech, especially in the House of Commons. According to a 2001 Gallup Poll, she shares that anxiety with 40% of the population as public speaking is the #2 among Top Ten Fears polled. What are some steps those who agree to witness on stewardship topics can take to reduce the apparent stress public speaking causes? Continue reading

The Lord’s Prayer and Stewardship

During Holy Week I enjoyed a little book called “Living Prayer” by Anthony Bloom, a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church until his death in 2003. His chapter on the Lord’s Prayer traces a path of ascent, beginning with the final words “Deliver us from evil” and culminating with “Our Father.” Continue reading
